CNC Plastic parts

  • A plastic CNC part is a precise part or prototype sample.
  • That is manufactured by using computer numerical control (CNC) technology and through cutting of plastic raw materials.
  • CNC plastic machining:

    • Using computer numerical control (CNC) machines to cut plastic blocks into desired shapes,
    • Offering high precision without the need for molds.
    • It is particularly suitable for prototyping or small-batch production parts.

     

    Which plastics can be CNC machined?

    • Mainly common engineering plastics material: ABS, PC (polycarbonate), PMMA (acrylic), PA (nylon), POM (polyoxymethylene), and PEEK.
    • POM has high strength and low friction coefficient, making it ideal for gears and bearings;
    • PMMA (acrylic) offers excellent transparency but tends to stick to cutting tools;
    • PA (nylon) is wear-resistant but its hygroscopic nature affects dimensional stability.
    • PEEK provides the best overall performance but is more expensive, commonly used in medical and aerospace applications.
    • These materials offer good mechanical properties and are relatively easy to machine.

     

    The advantage of plastic CNC machined:

    • CNC plastic processing does not require mold making.
    • With CAD files, it can be directly processed.
    • The sample production cycle can be completed within the same day.
    • Small batch production can range from 1 piece to 1,000 pieces.
    • Compared to injection molding, it has no parting lines or layer patterns on the surface, resulting in a smoother appearance.
    • The accuracy can reach 0.005 – 0.01mm.
    • If you need to produce tens of thousands of pieces, injection molding has a lower cost.
    • CNC is more suitable for R&D verification, prototype production, and small batch customization scenarios.

     

    The process of CNC machining plastic parts:

    Step Description
    Design phase ² Design the mold structure according to the requirements of the product design.

    ² Perform heat treatment on the molds and ensure they reach the required hardness level.

    Programming stage ² Prepare the processing program sheet (including the part name, quantity, blank size, etc.).

    ² Input the compiled program into the CNC system and conduct a trial run.

    ² Correct the errors in the program.

    Preparation stage ² It is necessary to prepare the plastic raw materials and fix them on the worktable of the CNC machine.

    ² At the same time, choosing the appropriate cutting tools is also crucial, as different plastic materials react differently to the cutting tools.

    Processing stage ² The CNC machine tool automatically plans and executes the tool path according to the numerical control program instructions.

    ² The moving parts of the machine tool (such as the spindle, worktable, etc.) move along the predetermined trajectory under the control of the numerical control system, completing operations such as cutting, drilling, and milling of plastic parts.

    ² During the processing, the CNC system will monitor in real time the positions of the tools and the workpiece, as well as cutting forces and other parameters, and make adjustments when necessary to ensure processing accuracy and quality.

    Post-processing stage ² After the processing is completed,

    ² It may be necessary to perform post-treatment operations (polishing and deburring, etc.) on the plastic parts to enhance their surface smoothness and overall quality.
